The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is pleased to announce that Jennifer Buss, PhD, has joined the Institute as a Research Fellow reporting to the CEO's Office.
Dr. Buss completed her studies for a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Maryland Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her dissertation was on iodide salvage in the thyroid and the evolution of halogen conservation in lower organisms. She has performed graduate research in the areas of enzymology, bioinformatics, molecular and structural biology. Dr. Buss received her BS in biochemistry with a minor in mathematics from the University of Delaware. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She is a native of Annapolis, MD.
Potomac Institute for Policy Studies Senior Fellow Amb. David Smith (Ret.) is the Director of the Potomac Institute Cyber Center. He is a cyber security and cyber policy analyst, and a former US arms negotiator. In a recent interview on the Internet's Blog Talk Radio show, he previewed his upcoming role at Counter Terror Expo US, which will be held in Washington, DC, on May 16 and 17. Amb. The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is pleased to announce that Senior Fellow and Board of Regents Member, The Honorable Charles Herzfeld, PhD, has been inducted into the Internet Society's Internet Hall of Fame in Geneva, Switzerland. The Hall of Fame notes on its website that "Charles Herzfeld served as director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the 1960s. Under his leadership, he recognized the importance of computers and oversaw the decision for the creation of ARPANET, which eventually became the Internet." Dr. Herzfeld was named an "Internet Hall of Fame Pioneer." The latest inductees were announced April 23 at the annual meeting of the Internet Society in Geneva. The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is pleased to announce that Jamie Barnett, Jr., RDML USNR (Ret.) has been named Senior Vice President of Academic Programs and Research. RDML Barnett recently completed an Intergovernmental Personnel Assignment as Chief of the Federal Communications Commission's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB). He previously served as a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute.
Commenting on the appointment, Institute Chairman and CEO Michael Swetnam said, "The Institute is honored and privileged to have RDML Barnett return after a very successful tour with the FCC. His leadership and experience are greatly needed. I am personally very happy to welcome him home."
RDML Barnett added, "Potomac Institute is well positioned and staffed to address the technology and policy of some of the most difficult issues facing the Nation, such as cybersecurity, supply chain security, public safety communications and the rise of peer competitors. It is really exciting to be back as part of the Potomac Institute team."
