Potomac Institute for Policy Studies Senior Fellow Amb. David Smith, (Ret.), is the Director of the Georgian Security Analysis Center in Tbilisi, Georgia. In a recent column for the Georgian publication Tabula, he writes that as Western nations are marking this year's anniversary of the Allied victory over the Nazis in World War II, it's worth noting that Russia is celebrating the occasion, too - despite the Soviets' subsequent history of repression. Smith writes that Moscow's V-E Day parade was expected to feature "20,000 troops, 100 vehicles and flag-bedecked Mi-8 helicopters," a display that he suggests strikes a false note, given Russia's apparent nostalgia for the bad old days of the Soviet Union.
